Hanwei Global Security Information

This issue summarizes global security intelligence updates from September 9 to September 15, 2024. According to security risk assessments, the security levels of various regions are as shown in the global risk map. Afghanistan, Nigeria, Myanmar, Pakistan, Ukraine, Palestine, Israel and other regions are extremely high-risk areas. During this period, security incidents such as armed conflicts and terrorist attacks occurred frequently in these regions, and Chinese-funded enterprises stationed abroad need to enhance their own security precautions. Middle East Region

(I) Syria

Multiple attacks in Hama Province leave 18 dead and 37 injured. On September 9, the Masyaf area in Hama Province, central Syria, was repeatedly attacked by Israeli missiles and drones, resulting in 18 deaths and 37 injuries. The attacks also caused damage to local infrastructure, power grids, roads, etc., and triggered multiple fires. The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attacks as acts of aggression and called on the international community to condemn Israel.

(II) Iraq

Bomb attack in Baghdad, the capital, leaves 2 dead and 2 injured.On September 9, a bomb attack occurred in the Salamiya Special Zone in northwestern Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, resulting in 2 deaths and 2 injuries. On that day, a takeaway delivery tricycle with an improvised explosive device was detonated near a military checkpoint, killing the tricycle driver and 1 Iraqi soldier, and injuring 2 soldiers. Currently, Iraqi security forces have launched an investigation into the incident.

Rocket attack near Baghdad International Airport.On September 10, the area near Baghdad International Airport in the capital of Iraq was attacked by 2 "Katyusha" rockets, with no reports of casualties or building damage. Among them, 1 rocket hit the area where the U.S.-led international coalition is stationed, and the other hit a building of the Iraqi counter-terrorism department. So far, no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Attack on patrol in Kirkuk leaves 2 dead and 3 injured.On September 13, an Iraqi military patrol was attacked by militants from the extremist group "Islamic State" in Kirkuk, northern Iraq, resulting in the death of 2 officers, 3 soldiers injured, and damage to patrol vehicles. The Iraqi military stated that there are still "Islamic State" militants active near the incident site, and a comprehensive search of the area is currently underway.

(III) Palestine and Israel

Palestinian deaths from the Palestine-Israel conflict exceed 41,100.From September 9 to September 15, the Israel Defense Forces continued to engage in fierce clashes with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (Jihad) in various places such as the central and southern Gaza Strip cities of Khan Younis. As of September 14, since the outbreak of the new round of Palestine-Israel conflict, the Israeli military's military operations in the Gaza Strip have resulted in 41,182 Palestinian deaths and 95,280 injuries. Among them, the Israeli military's air strike on September 10 on a camp for displaced persons in the Mawasi area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip killed 40 people and injured more than 60 others. In addition, the Israeli military bombed a school in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip on the 11th, killing 18 people, including 6 staff members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

UN convoy hijacked by Israeli military.On September 10, UN Secretary-General spokesman Dujarric confirmed that the Israel Defense Forces detained a UN convoy carrying out vaccination work in northern Gaza Strip on September 9, threatened UN staff with guns, and damaged the convoy's vehicles. On that day, a UN convoy transporting polio vaccines to northern Gaza Strip was stopped by Israeli troops at a checkpoint at gunpoint. The Israeli military detained the convoy on the grounds that there were "Palestinian suspects" in the convoy.

(IV) Lebanon

Multiple Israeli attacks leave 2 dead and 9 injured.On September 10, a five-story building in Nabatieh, southeastern Lebanon, was attacked by an Israeli drone, injuring 8 people; on the same day, many places in southern Lebanon were shelled by Israeli forces, killing Hezbollah commander Mohammed Qassem Al-Shah; on September 11, the town of Mays Jebel in southern Lebanon was attacked by an Israeli drone, resulting in 1 death and 1 injury.

(V) Jordan

Shooting leaves 4 dead.On September 10, media reported that a shooting occurred on September 8 at the Allenby Bridge land border crossing between Jordan and the Palestinian West Bank, resulting in 4 deaths. On that day, an attacker drove from Jordan into the Allenby Bridge land border crossing and opened fire on 3 Israelis, killing 3 people. The attacker was then killed by Israeli security forces. The Jordanian Ministry of the Interior issued a statement saying that the gunman was from Ma'an Province in southern Jordan and that the shooting was an individual act. The Israel Defense Forces classified the incident as a "terrorist attack."

(VI) Iran

Armed attack in Sistan-Baluchestan Province leaves 3 dead and 1 injured.On September 12, an armed attack occurred in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, southeastern Iran, resulting in 3 deaths and 1 injury. In the evening of that day, unidentified armed men opened fire on border guards refueling at a gas station in the province, killing 3 soldiers and injuring 1 civilian. After the incident, the terrorist organization "Jaish al-Adl" claimed responsibility for the attack.

(VII) Yemen

US-UK attack in Taiz Province leaves 2 dead and 5 injured.On September 10, the Jenaid School in the Taiziyah District of Taiz Province, controlled by the Houthi armed forces in southwestern Yemen, was hit by an air strike by the US-UK coalition, resulting in the death of 2 schoolgirls and 5 injuries.

US military claims to have destroyed 3 drones and 2 missile systems.On September 9, the US Central Command stated in a post that in the past 24 hours, US Central Command forces destroyed 2 drones and two missile systems in areas controlled by the Houthi armed forces in Yemen. Currently, there has been no response from the Yemeni Houthi armed forces.

Houthi armed forces claim to have shot down two US drones.On September 10, the Yemeni Houthi armed forces announced that the group shot down a US MQ-9 "Reaper" drone in Saada Province, northern Yemen. This is the second US drone shot down by the group in the past 72 hours and the ninth such drone shot down since October last year.


Asia-Pacific Region

(I) Afghanistan

Afghan-Pakistani border conflict leaves 2 dead and 11 injured.On September 9, an armed conflict broke out in the Zazi Maidan area on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, resulting in 2 deaths and 11 injuries on the Afghan side. The casualties on the Pakistani side are unknown. Since the end of August this year, Afghan forces and the Pakistani military have clashed multiple times on the border, resulting in many casualties.

Shooting incident in Daikundi Province leaves 14 dead and 4 injured.On September 12, a shooting incident occurred in Daikundi Province, central Afghanistan, resulting in 14 deaths and 4 injuries. On that day, a group of unidentified armed men opened fire on civilians in Daikundi Province, causing casualties. After the incident, the extremist group "Islamic State" claimed responsibility for the attack.

(II) Pakistan

Two shooting incidents in Balochistan Province leave 4 dead and 5 injured.On September 13, a shooting incident occurred in each of Dera Murad Jamali and Jhal Magsi areas in Balochistan Province, Pakistan, resulting in a total of 4 deaths and 5 injuries.

Multiple attacks leave 1 dead and 20 injured.On September 11, a vehicle carrying polio workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, was attacked by "Islamic State Khorasan" militants, injuring 6 medical staff; on September 12, multiple places in southern Balochistan Province were attacked by the extremist group "Baloch Liberation Army", resulting in at least 1 death and 9 injuries; on the same day, a hand grenade attack occurred in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan Province, injuring 5 people.

(III) Myanmar

Military bombings leave 24 dead and 15 injured.On September 9, a medical center of the Arakan Army (AA) in Xincun, Paung Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar, where prisoners of war and inmates are housed, was bombed by military warplanes, resulting in about 20 deaths and 15 injuries; on September 11, a village near Dawei City, Tanintharyi Province, was bombed by the military, causing 4 deaths.

(IV) Australia

Anti-war protests erupt in Melbourne.On September 11, the International Weapons Exhibition in Melbourne, Australia, triggered large-scale anti-war protests. During this period, conflicts broke out between the police and protesters, resulting in 27 police officers being injured. On that day, thousands of demonstrators poured into the city center, set fires, and blocked major streets. Protesters also threw stones and irritant liquids at the police, who used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Currently, the protests have subsided, and 42 people have been arrested by the police.

African Region

(I) Nigeria

Multiple attacks leave 8 dead and many kidnapped.According to the monitoring report of Hanwei International's security officers stationed in West Africa and media reports, on September 9, an armed attack occurred in Kaduna State, resulting in the kidnapping of 2 nurses and multiple patients; on September 12, security forces in Zamfara State were attacked by armed men, causing 8 deaths of military and police personnel. On that day, military and police personnel were ambushed by bandits while escorting construction company workers to Zamfara State; on the same day, armed bandits blocked the Gusau–Funtua Highway in Zamfara State, and many people were kidnapped.

Guard against bandit attacks in central and southern regions.According to the monitoring report of Hanwei International's security officers stationed in West Africa, on the afternoon of September 10, dozens of Biafran militants moved from a small town in Enugu State along Road A3 towards Ebe, and their current whereabouts are unknown. This area is a high-risk zone for armed attacks, robberies, and kidnappings, with multiple major kidnapping and attack incidents occurring recently. It is reminded that Chinese-funded enterprises and citizens in Nigeria should remain highly vigilant and strengthen their security awareness.

Boat capsizing in Zamfara State leaves 41 dead.On September 14, a boat capsized in a river in Zamfara State, northwestern Nigeria, resulting in 41 deaths. Local officials stated that a wooden boat carrying 53 farmers capsized on the way to farmland near Gusau Town. After the incident, the local government quickly mobilized residents for emergency rescue, rescuing 12 people, while the remaining 41 died. It is learned that the cause of the capsizing was overloading.

Monkeypox cases increase.On September 12, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the number of confirmed monkeypox cases in the country had risen from 48 to 67. All states except Borno State have reported confirmed monkeypox cases. The center also stated that monkeypox cases in Nigeria are of the less severe Type 2B. The National Centre for Disease Control, in conjunction with the Port Health Bureau, has strengthened monitoring of cross-border personnel and special groups to prevent mpox clade I from entering the country.

(II) South Africa

Two shooting incidents leave 4 dead and 6 injured.On September 12, a shooting incident occurred in Cape Town, Western Cape Province, South Africa, resulting in 3 deaths and 5 injuries; on September 14, a shooting occurred in a park in Johannesburg, South Africa, causing 1 death and 1 injury.

Schistosomiasis outbreak in Limpopo Province. On September 9, a schistosomiasis outbreak occurred in the Mopani District of Limpopo Province, northern South Africa. Among them, more than 140 students in a primary school were diagnosed and are currently receiving treatment. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease mainly transmitted through water, and humans and animals become infected by contact with water containing schistosome cercariae. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, bloody diarrhea, hematuria, urinary tract infections, and persistent headaches.

(III) Central African Republic

Attack on government military camp in Ouham-Pendé Province leaves 4 soldiers dead.On September 12, a government military camp in Bozoum, the capital of Ouham-Pendé Province, Central African Republic, was attacked by unknown armed men, resulting in the death of 4 soldiers. So far, no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

(IV) Trinidad and Tobago

Chinese citizens robbed in Diego Martin.On September 9, a Chinese couple running a Chinese restaurant in Trinidad and Tobago was robbed by 6 robbers who broke into their home. The suspects stole 20,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars from the cash register, a Samsung tablet, a digital video recorder, two mobile phones, and some jewelry.

(V) Comoros

President injured in attack.On September 13, Comorian President Azali was attacked with a knife while attending a funeral, sustaining minor injuries. The attacker, a young active-duty gendarme, has been arrested by the police. Currently, the relevant investigation is underway.

(VI) Ethiopia

44 people kidnapped in Oromia Region.From September 11 to 12, two attack incidents occurred in Assela Town, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, resulting in 44 people being kidnapped. Among them, on the 11th, the Shene armed group intercepted 8 public buses in the Galema Forest, kidnapping 38 people; on the 12th, the armed group kidnapped 6 people in Assela Town. After the incident, the armed men demanded a ransom of 500,000 to 1,000,000 birr from the hostages' families.

(VII) Sudan

Armed conflicts continue in multiple locations.From September 9 to 15, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continued to engage in battles in the capital Khartoum, North Khartoum, Omdurman, and multiple locations in the central and western regions. Among them, the two warring parties fiercely contested the capital city of El Fasher in North Darfur State, western Sudan. According to statistics, the armed conflict that has lasted for more than a year has caused over 20,000 deaths and displaced more than 10 million people.


Europe and America Region

(I) United States

Shooting incident in Omaha leaves 1 injured.On September 11, a shooting incident occurred at a high school in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, leaving a 15-year-old boy seriously injured. A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested by the police.

Robbery in New York's Chinatown leaves 1 Chinese dead and 1 injured.On September 10, a robbery occurred in an apartment building in Manhattan, New York City, New York State, USA, resulting in 1 Chinese death and 1 injury. On that day, 2 masked suspects followed a Chinese man into the apartment building elevator, attempting to rob him. When the elevator reached the floor where the man lived and the door opened, his wife and son heard his cry for help and fought with the robbers. The wife was shot dead and the son was injured. Currently, the 2 robbers are at large.

(II) Ukraine

Russia-Ukraine armed conflict continues.From September 9 to September 15, Russia's special military operation in Ukraine continued. The Russian Ministry of Defense recently released a battle report stating that in the past week, the Russian military carried out 39 cluster strikes on Ukraine, targeting military-industrial enterprises, energy facilities, military airports, weapons and ammunition depots, and Ukrainian military strongholds. In Kursk Oblast, the Russian military launched a large-scale counteroffensive, recapturing 10 settlements, repelling dozens of Ukrainian attacks, and destroying nearly a hundred armored vehicles and dozens of tanks. On the Ukrainian side, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces released a battle report saying that within this week, hundreds of battles took place in the frontline areas, most of which occurred in the directions of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove, and the frontline situation remains complex and tense. In addition, Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners on the 14th, with each side handing over 103 people to the other.

(III) Colombia

Attack on police station in southern capital leaves 10 injured.On September 10, a police station in Kennedy Town, southern Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, was attacked with a grenade, injuring 8 civilians and 2 police officers. It is reported that the attack was a retaliation by criminal gangs against the security rectification operations carried out by the police.

(IV) Mexico

Armed clash in Nayarit leaves 11 dead.On September 12, an armed clash between criminal groups occurred in the city of Huajicori, Nayarit, western Mexico, resulting in 11 deaths. The conflicting parties were the two major criminal groups, "Jalisco New Generation" and "Sinaloa".

(V) Netherlands

Shooting incident in Dronten leaves 1 dead and 2 injured.On September 9, a shooting incident occurred in a residential area in Dronten, Netherlands, resulting in 1 death and 2 serious injuries.

(VI) Ecuador

Head of Coastal Prison shot dead.On September 12, Maria Daniela Icaza, the director of the Coastal Prison, the largest prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador, was shot dead on her way to Guasmo Sur Hospital, and 1 accompanying person was injured. Currently, the identity of the attacker is unknown, and the police are investigating.

(VII) Russia

Attacks in multiple locations leave 1 dead and 3 injured.On September 9, a fuel storage facility in Russia's Belgorod Oblast was attacked by a Ukrainian drone, causing 12 fuel storage tanks to explode and catch fire. On September 10, the Ramenskoe District of Moscow Oblast was attacked by a Ukrainian drone, resulting in 1 death and 3 injuries, and two apartment buildings were damaged. In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on the 10th, the Russian air defense system destroyed and intercepted 144 Ukrainian drones in Bryansk Oblast, Moscow Oblast, Kursk Oblast, Tula Oblast, Belgorod Oblast, Kaluga Oblast, Voronezh Oblast, Lipetsk Oblast, and Oryol Oblast.

(VIII) Belgium

Knife attack in Brussels leaves 1 dead.On September 13, a knife attack occurred in the Laeken district of northwestern Brussels, Belgium, resulting in the death of 1 man. Currently, the specific cause of the incident is unknown, and the police are investigating it.

(IX) Italy

Fire in Milan shop kills 3 Chinese citizens.On September 12, a fire broke out in a shop in Milan, Italy, killing 3 Chinese citizens. Currently, the police are investigating the cause of the fire. The Chinese Consulate General in Milan contacted the local police and relevant departments immediately, followed up on the development of the situation, and provided assistance to the families of the victims. At the same time, the Consulate General once again reminded Chinese citizens in Italy to strengthen their safety awareness and ensure their personal safety.


Maritime Security

(I) Black Sea

Grain ship damaged by missile attack.On September 13, the bulk carrier "Aya" flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was hit by a missile while leaving the Ukrainian port of Chernomorsk and entering Romanian waters in the Danube River, causing damage to the ship's port side, a cargo hold, and a crane.

(II) Senegal

The capsizing of the migrant boat has resulted in 26 deaths and many people missing.On September 9th, media reports said that a migrant ship sank in the waters near Senegal on September 8th, resulting in at least 26 deaths and many people missing.
