Hanwei Global Security Information

 

This issue summarizes the dynamics of security intelligence information in various regions around the world from January 20th to 26th, 2025. According to the security risk assessment, the security levels of various regions are as shown on the global risk map. Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Ukraine, Palestine and Israel are classified as extremely high-risk areas. During this period, armed conflicts, terrorist attacks and other security incidents occurred frequently in these regions. Chinese-funded enterprises stationed abroad need to enhance their own security precautions. This information is only for internal risk assessment purposes of our company.

The Middle East region       

(1) Syria

Six people were killed in the conflict in Homs Province. On January 21st, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that an armed conflict broke out in the border area of Homs Province in Syria near Lebanon, resulting in six deaths.

(2) Iraq

Three Islamic State militants were killed in Anbar Province. On January 22nd, the Iraqi military launched a crackdown on the hideout of the extremist group "Islamic State" militants in the desert area of Anbar Province in the west of the country, killing three militants including a senior leader and destroying two cars.

The explosion at the ammunition depot resulted in 3 deaths and 4 injuries. On January 21st, an explosion occurred at an ammunition depot in the Talmiyah area, about 40 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, killing three Iraqi officers and injuring four others. On that day, when the security forces were conducting a security inspection at the scene, the ammunition depot exploded due to a "technical error".

(3) Palestine and Israel

Israeli military attacks in the West Bank have left six Palestinians dead and 35 injured. On January 21st, the Israeli army launched a large-scale attack on the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank and the Jenin refugee camp, resulting in at least six Palestinians being killed and 35 others injured. On that day, the Israeli army dispatched military vehicles and drones to attack multiple houses in the area and a car in the refugee camp in Jenin City, resulting in dozens of casualties. According to data released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, since the new round of the Palestine-Israel conflict began, more than 800 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed in attacks launched by the Israeli army.

A knife attack in Tel Aviv, Israel, left one dead and four injured. On January 21st, a knife attack occurred in Tel Aviv, Israel, leaving four people injured. That night, a man armed with a knife stabbed four people in succession on the Naharat Benjamin pedestrian Street in Tel Aviv and adjacent streets before being shot dead by the police. The attacker was a Moroccan and the motive for the attack is unknown. This is the second knife attack that has occurred in Tel Aviv in recent days. The police have classified this attack as a terrorist attack.

(4) Lebanon

Hezbollah officials were killed in an attack. On January 21st, Sheikh Mohammed Hamadi, an official of Hezbollah in Lebanon, was killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in the Western Bekaa region. At present, the identity of the attacker is unknown and security personnel have launched an investigation into the incident.

(V) Yemen

The Houthi forces detained seven UN staff members. On January 23rd, UN agencies said that the Houthi armed group in Yemen detained another seven Yemeni employees working for UNICEF and the World Food Programme on the same day. The Houthi armed group claimed that all the detained individuals were associated with the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. To ensure the safety of all personnel, the United Nations has suspended all official operations in the areas controlled by the organization.

(6) Turkey

A hotel fire in Bole Province has claimed 78 lives and injured 51 people. On January 21st, a fire broke out at the Kartakaya Ski Center hotel in Bolu Province, northwestern Turkey, resulting in 78 deaths and 51 injuries. At around 3:30 a.m. on that day, a hotel with 234 people staying suddenly caught fire, and nearly a hundred people were trapped in their rooms and unable to escape. All the casualties were Turkish citizens. There have been no reports of casualties among foreign citizens for the time being. At present, 11 people, including the hotel owner, have been detained. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared on the same day that January 22 would be a National Day of mourning to remember the victims of the fire.

The Asia-Pacific region

(1) Afghanistan

One person was killed in an explosion attack in Takhar Province. On January 25th, an explosion occurred in front of the building where the governor's office of Tahar Province in Afghanistan was located. The attacker who caused the explosion died on the spot. Abdul Mattin Kani, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry of the interim government of Afghanistan, said that the attacker was killed in the explosion and failed to reach his target due to the obstruction of security personnel. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for this attack.

  A Chinese citizen in Takhar Province was killed in an attack. On January 21st, a Chinese citizen was attacked and killed by unidentified individuals in the Katakjar area of Khwaja Bahauddin District, Tahar Province, Afghanistan. On that day, the Chinese citizen was killed by unidentified gunmen on his way to the Dasht Fort area in Takhar Province by vehicle. The cause of the incident is still unclear and the investigation is underway. In this regard, the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan reminds Chinese citizens, enterprises and institutions in Afghanistan to enhance their awareness of prevention, remain highly vigilant, strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure personal and property safety.

(2) Pakistan

Multiple attacks have left 17 people dead and many injured. On January 20th, a shooting incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Bhanamari Police Station in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, leaving two people injured, including a journalist. On the same day, the government army camp in the Kochidashkutan area of Balochistan Province was attacked by the "Balochistan Liberation Front" (BLF) militants, resulting in 16 deaths and many injuries. On January 21st, a truck of Pakistan Oil and Gas Development Limited (OGDCL) was attacked by an improvised explosive device in the Qila Saifullah district of Quetta, resulting in the death of one worker and the injury of one. So far, no organization has claimed responsibility for this matter.

A crackdown operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province killed 30 terrorists. On January 25th, the Pakistani military launched a clearance operation against extremist terrorists in the Rajmerward, Gelag and Khyber regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in the northwest of the country. A total of 30 terrorists were killed and a large amount of weapons and ammunition were seized.

(3) The Philippines

The military in Brasilan Province was attacked, resulting in 4 deaths and 12 injuries. On January 22nd, the Philippine troops accompanying the staff of the United Nations Development Programme were attacked by armed men in Brasilan Province in the south of the country. Subsequently, a firefight broke out between the two sides, resulting in the deaths of two military soldiers, 12 injuries and the burning of a military vehicle. Two militants were killed.

(4) Japan

Three people were injured in a knife attack in Nagano Prefecture. On January 22nd, a knife attack occurred near JR Nagano Station in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, leaving three people injured. At present, the suspect is at large.

(4) Australia

Two people were injured in the shooting incident in Melbourne. On January 24th, a shooting incident occurred in Melbourne, Australia, leaving two teenagers injured. The cause of the shooting incident was a fight among young people. Currently, the police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

(V) India

A train crash in Maharashtra has left 12 people dead and 15 injured. On January 22nd, a train collision occurred in Maharashtra, India, resulting in at least 12 passengers' deaths and 15 injuries. On that day, when a train bound for Mumbai made an emergency stop due to equipment failure, some passengers jumped off and were hit by trains on adjacent tracks, resulting in a large number of casualties.

The African region

(1) Nigeria

Two attacks left 30 people dead and 13 injured. On January 20th, a market in the Fika area of Yobe State in northeastern Nigeria was attacked by gunmen, resulting in the deaths of 7 vendors and 11 injuries. That night, six armed robbers looted a large amount of cash from three stores and exchanged fire with vendors. Three of the robbers were killed, two others were injured and fled, and one was arrested. On January 23rd, a fishing village in Borno State was attacked by armed men, resulting in at least 20 fishermen's deaths.

Safety warning. According to the monitoring report of the Security Officer of Hanwei International stationed in West Africa, on January 24th, the Police command of Kano State issued a warning notice: Suspected armed elements plan to launch a terrorist attack in Kano State in the near future. Chinese-funded enterprises and individuals in the relevant regions are requested to reduce travel and avoid going to crowded areas. Pay close attention to the dynamics around your area and enhance the defense of your camp accommodation.

(2) South Africa

Two people were killed in the Johannesburg shooting incident. On January 24th, a shooting incident occurred outside a pub in the center of Johannesburg, northeastern South Africa, resulting in two deaths.

(3) Democratic Republic of the Congo

The governor of North Kivu Province was killed in an attack. On January 23rd, the governor of North Kivu Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Silimwami, was shot while inspecting the frontline in the province and died after being sent to the hospital. At present, the identity of the attacker remains unknown.

The camp of a Chinese-funded mining company in Haut-Velais was robbed. On January 20th, media reports said that the camp of a Chinese-funded mining company in Kibali Town, Watsa District, Haut-Velai Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, was subjected to armed robbery on January 19th, and five Chinese citizens were kidnapped. On that day, nine unidentified armed men broke into the company, controlled the security personnel, and then carried out a large-scale robbery of the company. They also kidnapped five Chinese citizens and fled the scene. Subsequently, five people were released about 300 meters away from the camp. The police said that the possibility of collusion between internal employees and the robbers could not be ruled out.

(4) Somalia

A roadside bomb attack in Barry left 13 people dead and 7 injured. On January 21st, a military vehicle in Somalia was hit by a roadside bomb attack by militants of the extremist group "Islamic State" in Bari State in the northeastern part of the country, resulting in 13 soldiers' deaths and 7 injuries.

(V) Zimbabwe

A Chinese citizen in the central province was stabbed. On January 21st, a Chinese farm employer was stabbed by a local employee at the Bijour farm in the Central Province of Central Zimbabwe. At present, the police have launched an investigation into the attack.

(6) Sudan

Armed conflicts continue. From January 20th to 26th, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force continued to engage in fierce exchanges of fire in the areas surrounding the capital Khartoum, the western city of Omdurman, and multiple fronts in the central region. The armed conflict that has lasted for more than a year has caused about 30,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries in Sudan. Among them, the "Saudi Hospital" in Fahir, the capital of North Darfur State in the west of the country, was attacked by the Sudan Rapid Support Force on the 24th, resulting in 68 deaths.

(6) Angola

The cholera epidemic has claimed 32 lives. On January 21st, statistics from the Angolan Ministry of Health showed that as of that day, a total of 671 cases of cholera infection had been reported across the country in this round of the epidemic, including 32 deaths. The epidemic is mainly concentrated in Luanda Province. Cholera is an acute intestinal infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, mainly transmitted through unclean water sources and food. Patients often experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and high fever. Severe cases and delayed treatment can lead to death.


Europe and America

(1) The United States

Three shooting incidents resulted in three deaths and three injuries. On January 20th, a US border patrol officer was shot dead during a traffic check in Covent, Vermont, on the US-Canada border. On January 22nd, a shooting incident occurred at Antioch High School in Nashville, the capital of Tennessee in the southern United States, resulting in two deaths and two injuries, including the gunman. The 17-year-old gunman, Henderson, a student at the school, shot and committed suicide after having an "argument" with a girl. On January 23rd, a shooting incident occurred in the Brooklyn area of New York, leaving one person injured.

Wildfires broke out again in the northern part of Los Angeles. On January 22nd, another wildfire broke out near Lake Castek in the northwest of Los Angeles, USA, with an area affected by the fire exceeding 10,000 acres. At present, the wildfire has burned over 40.4 square kilometers of shrublands, and only 36% of the fire has been brought under control. Local schools were closed, enterprises were shut down, and tens of thousands of residents were evacuated.

(2) Ukraine 

The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues. From January 20th to 26th, Russia's special military operation in Ukraine continued. The Russian Ministry of Defense recently released a battle report stating that in the past week, the Russian army has carried out dozens of cluster strikes on the Ukrainian army's energy facilities, military airports, and unmanned aerial vehicle assembly and storage facilities, destroying US-made M113 armored personnel carriers and other equipment, shooting down and intercepting eight "Hammer" aviation-guided bombs, 12 "Himars" rockets and hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles. It has controlled the settlements of Solyonoye in the Donetsk region and Zabadnoye in the Kharkiv region. Repelled multiple attacks by the Ukrainian army in the directions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, etc., and launched several offensives. In the Kursk region, the Russian army continued to strike the armed forces of the Ukrainian army, destroying 7 armored vehicles and 4 tanks, and the Ukrainian army suffered losses of more than 270 people. On the Ukrainian side, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released a battle report stating that within this week, the Ukrainian Air Force and missile forces attacked Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment concentration areas, command posts, warehouses, artillery systems and other targets. Repelled hundreds of Russian attacks in directions such as Kharkiv, Pokrovsk and Kursk. In addition, the Ukrainian army attacked an oil depot in Voronezh Oblast and an aircraft manufacturing plant in Smolensk Oblast and other infrastructure in Russia.

(3) Peru

One person was injured in an explosion attack in Trujillo. On January 20th, the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Trujillo, La Ligetade Region, Peru was attacked by explosives, resulting in one person being injured. Surveillance footage shows that the suspect threw a package in front of the procuratorate building and detonated explosives. The office of the Peruvian president said the attack was an "act of urban terrorism". At present, relevant investigations are underway.

(4) Germany

A knife attack in the city of Aschaffenburg left two people dead and three injured. On January 22nd, a knife attack occurred in the central park of Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a child, and three others injured. At present, the police have arrested two suspects and the relevant investigation is underway.

(V) Russia

Many places have been hit by Ukrainian air strikes. On January 21st, Ukrainian drones attacked the Bryansk, Rostov and Voronezh regions of Smolensk Oblast in Russia, and multiple explosions occurred. There are no reports on casualties and property damage for the time being.

(6) Colombia

The armed conflict in Northern Santander Province has left 80 people dead and 20 injured. From January 18th to 20th, the anti-government armed groups "National Liberation Organization of Colombia" and "Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia" have been engaged in continuous armed conflicts in the Catatumbo area of Northern Santander Province, Colombia, resulting in 80 deaths, over 20 injuries and the displacement of 11,000 people. At present, the Colombian government has dispatched approximately 5,000 soldiers to the border areas to deal with armed conflicts. For this reason, Colombian President Petro announced on January 20 that the country has entered a state of internal unrest and economic emergency to deal with the escalating armed conflict.

(7) Chile

The San Diego shooting incident left two dead and one injured. On January 20th, a shooting incident occurred in the town of SAN Julia in the Macur region of the Capital Region of Santiago, Chile, resulting in two deaths and one serious injury. This is the second shooting incident that has occurred in the area in the past 10 days. At present, the police have arrested two suspects and seized multiple firearms.   

 

Maritime safety

(1) Yemen

A migrant boat capsized in the waters near Taiz Province, killing 20 people. On January 22nd, a migrant boat capsized in the waters near Taiz Province in southwestern Yemen due to a "strong monsoon", resulting in 20 deaths. The ship, carrying 35 Ethiopian migrants, capsized on its way from Djibouti to Yemen.
