Hanwei Global Security Information

 

This issue summarizes the dynamics of security intelligence information in various regions around the world from January 13th to 19th, 2025. According to the security risk assessment, the security levels of various regions are as shown on the global risk map. Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Ukraine, Palestine, Israel and other regions are classified as extremely high-risk areas. During this period, armed conflicts, terrorist attacks and other security incidents occurred frequently in these regions. Chinese-funded enterprises stationed abroad need to enhance their own security precautions. This information is only for internal risk assessment purposes of our company.

 The Middle East region

(1) Iraq

Turkey killed two members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. On January 15th, Turkish security forces killed Isram Dotkanlu, the head of the Iranian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, and his bodyguards in northern Iraq.

(2) Palestine and Israel

Israel has reached a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. On January 15th, Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The agreement will be implemented in three phases. The first phase began on January 19th. Hamas released 33 detained individuals, and Israel released 1,890 detained Palestinian individuals. In the second stage, Hamas released the remaining detained individuals in exchange for the release of more Palestinian detainees, and the Israeli army completely withdrew from the Gaza Strip. In the third stage, all parties discussed the post-war governance and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on the evening of the 18th, saying that the Gaza ceasefire agreement approved by the government is a "temporary measure" and the Israeli military reserves the right to resume combat. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all relevant parties to strictly fulfill their commitments and ensure the full implementation of the agreement.

Israel continues to attack Gaza. On January 15th and 16th, the Israeli army continued to launch attacks on multiple areas in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 70 Palestinians, including several children. As of January 16th, the new round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused over 46,788 deaths and 110,453 injuries in Palestine.

The Houthi forces said they had attacked multiple targets in Israel. The Houthi armed group in Yemen said that on January 14th, they launched attacks on a power station in Eilat, southern Israel, and multiple targets in the Jaffa region using drones and cruise missiles. On January 17th, the organization once again launched missile and drone strikes on key targets in the three Israeli cities of Tel Aviv, Ashkelon and Eilat. On January 18th, the Houthi forces precisely targeted the Israeli Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv with Zolfagar ballistic missiles.

A knife attack in Tel Aviv, Israel, left one dead and one injured. On January 18th, a Palestinian from Tulakelm in the West Bank attacked pedestrians with a knife in Tel Aviv, Israel, causing one person to be injured. The attacker was shot dead by armed citizens.

(3) Iran

Three people were killed and one injured in a shooting incident in the capital Tehran. On January 18th, a shooting incident occurred at the entrance of the Supreme Court in Tehran, the capital of Iran, resulting in the deaths of two judges and injuries to one. The attacker then committed suicide. The attacker was once a service staff member of the Supreme Court. The police are conducting an investigation into the forces behind this "terrorist act".

The Asia-Pacific region

(1) Afghanistan

Four people were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Kunduz Province. On January 14th, a security checkpoint in Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, was attacked by members of the anti-government armed group "Afghan Freedom Front", resulting in the deaths of four soldiers.

(2) Pakistan

The clearance operation killed 35 terrorists. From January 13th to 14th, the Pakistani army carried out a crackdown on terrorist hideout in the Kazi area of Balochistan Province, the Dang area and Khyber area of Khyber Pakhtunkhpur Province, and the Tirah Valley area. A total of 35 terrorists were killed and a large amount of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices were seized.

(3) Thailand

Two bomb attacks resulted in two deaths and ten injuries. On January 13th, a bomb explosion occurred near the police station in Mueang Pattani district, Pattani Province, southern Thailand, injuring 9 police officers and 1 Malaysian tourist. On that day, a separatist hid a homemade bomb in a motorcycle beside the police station and detonated it with a timer. On January 14th, two border patrol police officers were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Si Banphot District, Si Sakhon District, Nalativa Province.

(4) Myanmar

The collapse accident at a mining area in Kachin State has claimed 32 lives. On January 13th, a mud pit collapse occurred in the jade mining area of Pagan Town, Kachin State, northern Myanmar, resulting in 32 deaths, multiple people missing, and 50 civilian houses being flooded. At present, the authorities are clearing the silt from the buried houses and restoring the blocked roads.


The African region

(1) Nigeria

Multiple attacks have killed 42 people. On January 12th, an attack occurred in Ogun State, resulting in the death of one Chinese citizen. On that day, a man and a woman broke into the office of Chinese citizen Chen Wang, assassinated him and then fled. Chen Wang, 33 years old now, is the manager of Fujida Electronic Technology Co., LTD., which is located along the Lagos-Ibadan Highway in Ogun State, Nigeria. Omolola Odutola, a spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Department, said the case would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Bureau. Currently, the two murderers are at large and the local police have issued a wanted notice. On January 13th, a Toyota car carrying Dutch citizens was attacked by armed bandits on the East-West Highway in Rivers State. When the driver fled, the vehicle lost control and fell from the bridge into the river. At present, the driver's body has been found and the police are conducting a comprehensive investigation. On the same day, the village of Duba in the Kukawa Local Government District of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria was attacked by an armed gang, resulting in at least 40 farmers' deaths and many others still missing.

76 extremist group militants were killed in Borno State. From January 7th to 13th, the Nigerian military carried out a clearing operation in multiple areas of Borno State in the northeastern part of the country. A total of 76 militants from the extremist groups "Boko Haram" and "Islamic State West Africa Province" were killed, 72 were arrested, 8 hostages were rescued, and a large number of weapons and ammunition including AK-47 rifles, grenades, rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices were seized.

An oil tanker explosion in Niger State killed 77 people and injured 25 others. On January 18th, an oil tanker overturned on a road in the Diko area of Niger State. When nearby residents rushed to grab fuel, the tanker caught fire and exploded, resulting in 77 deaths and 25 injuries.

(2) South Africa

A total of 246 miners were rescued in the Northwest Province. From January 13th to 15th, South African police rescued 246 trapped miners from an abandoned mine in Stillfontaine, Northwest Province of the country, and discovered 78 bodies at the same time. At the end of 2024, the South African police launched a special operation to crack down on illegal mining in Stillfontaine and other places. A large number of illegal miners were stranded in the mines out of fear of being arrested. The rescue operation has now come to an end.

(3) Democratic Republic of the Congo

The government forces recaptured many towns that were occupied by the rebels. On January 13th, the military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced that the government forces had recently recaptured several towns in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces that had been occupied by armed groups for several months, including the key town of Ngongu in the Masisi region.

(4) Somalia

The checkpoint in the capital Mogadishu was attacked. On January 15th, a government security checkpoint in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, was attacked by militants of the extremist group Al-Shabaab, resulting in multiple casualties among security personnel. The exact number is unknown. 

(V) South Sudan

A curfew has been imposed across the country. On January 17th, South Sudan announced a curfew across the country in response to possible "retaliatory attacks" against Sudanese citizens in the near future. It is reported that the video of Sudanese armed forces soldiers killing South Sudanese civilians in Sudan, which was spread on social media, has aroused strong dissatisfaction among the people of South Sudan. The rioters took the opportunity to attack and ransacked the shops run by Sudanese citizens in Juba.

(6) Sudan

Armed conflicts continue. From January 13th to 19th, 2025, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force continued to engage in fierce fighting in the areas surrounding the capital Khartoum, the western city of Omdurman and the central region. The armed conflict that has lasted for more than a year has caused about 30,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries in Sudan. Among them, the capital city of Emdurman in the Sudan region was hit by a large-scale artillery attack on the 13th, resulting in at least 120 civilian deaths and many injuries. In addition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released a report stating that approximately 30.4 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance this year, accounting for two-thirds of the country's population. At present, Sudan is one of the countries in the world facing the most severe humanitarian crisis, one of the four countries with the highest prevalence of acute malnutrition in the world, and the country with the largest number of displaced people globally.

Europe and America

(1) The United States

The shooting incident in Washington left one dead and three injured. On January 13th, a shooting incident occurred in an apartment building in the northeastern part of Washington D.C., the capital of the United States, resulting in one death and three police officers injured. On that day, a man opened fire in the lobby of an apartment building. After the police arrived at the scene, they exchanged fire with the suspect. Three police officers were injured and the suspect was shot dead by the police. According to the latest statistics from the US website "Gun Violence Archive", since 2025, 457 people have died and 874 have been injured in various types of gun violence incidents in the United States.

The wildfires in California continue. From January 13th to 17th, wildfires have been raging in the Los Angeles area of California, USA, causing at least 27 deaths and forcing the evacuation of 82,400 people. The damage and economic losses caused by wildfires will amount to between 250 billion and 275 billion US dollars, making it the most devastating natural disaster in the history of the United States.

(2) Ukraine 

The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues. From January 13th to 19th, 2025, Russia's special military operation in Ukraine continued. The Russian Ministry of Defense recently released a battle report stating that in the past week, the Russian armed forces have carried out eight cluster strikes on military targets and energy infrastructure in Ukraine, including military industrial complexes, military airports, drone production workshops and storage warehouses, using high-precision weapons and attack drones. It has controlled seven settlements in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. It shot down 43 US-made Himars rockets, 6 French-made Hammer aircraft-guided bombs and 747 unmanned aircraft. In the Kursk region, 801 square kilometers of land occupied by the Ukrainian army were recaptured (accounting for approximately 63% of the total occupied area). On the Ukrainian side, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces released a battle report stating that within this week, the Ukrainian army struck military targets such as concentrated areas of Russian personnel, command posts, and air defense systems, shooting down dozens of Russian missiles and dozens of drones. Repelled hundreds of Russian attacks in the directions of Kharkiv, Kupiansk, Pokrovsk, etc. In the direction of Kursk, fierce battles continued with the Russian army. In addition, on January 15th, Russia and Ukraine transferred 25 captured personnel to each other.

(3) Mexico

Five people were killed in a shooting incident in the state of Morelos. On January 13th, a shooting incident occurred in a town in the central Mexican state of Morelos, resulting in the deaths of five people, including a woman. On that day, five victims were stopped and shot dead by an unknown gunman on their way home after running for a community collective resource management position. At present, the identity of the attacker remains unknown.

(4) Ecuador

Multiple attacks have left six people dead and one injured. On January 13th, a shooting incident occurred in the La Floresta area south of Guayaquil, Ecuador, resulting in 5 deaths and 1 injury. On the same day, a taxi driver was kidnapped near Las Orquideas in Guayaquil and was later rescued by the police. The police arrested five kidnappers. On the same day, a shooting incident occurred in Wakilias, El Oro Province, Ecuador, resulting in one death.

(V) Germany

Two attacks left two people injured. On January 14th, a knife attack occurred in Freensburg, Germany, resulting in one person being injured. On the same day, a robbery occurred at Latnau Square in Weimar, Germany, leaving a teenager injured and a baseball cap worth 200 euros stolen. At present, three teenagers involved in violent robbery have been arrested by the police.

(6) Colombia

The armed conflict in Norte Santander Province has left 34 people dead and 20 injured. On January 17th, armed conflicts broke out between the Colombian anti-government armed groups, the "National Liberation Organization of Colombia" and the "Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia", in the Catatumbo area of the Northern Santander Province of the country, resulting in 34 deaths, 20 injuries and 20 people being kidnapped by the "National Liberation Organization of Colombia". After the incident, the Colombian Armed forces dispatched an additional 300 troops to the area to stop the local violent activities.

Nine people were injured when a police patrol was attacked. On January 17th, Colombian police patrol teams were twice attacked by bombings by the "National Liberation Organization of Colombia" on the highway from Cucuta to Port Santander in Northern Santander Province and in Peraya, Cesar Province, resulting in a total of 9 police officers being injured.

(7) Slovakia

The knife attack resulted in two deaths and one injury. On January 16th, a knife attack occurred in a high school teaching building in eastern Slovakia, resulting in at least two deaths and one injury. The attacker was an 18-year-old student who has been arrested by the police. The specific situation is still under further investigation.

(8) Russia 

Kaluga Oblast was attacked by the Ukrainian army. On January 18th, a company in Kaluga Oblast, Russia, was attacked by a Ukrainian drone and caught fire. So far, there have been no reports of casualties. 

Maritime safety

(1) Red Sea

The Houthi forces said they were attacking US aircraft carriers. The Houthi armed group in Yemen said that on January 15th and 17th, the group twice used missiles and drones to strike the US aircraft carrier "Harry Truman" which was sailing in the Red Sea. Since the aircraft carrier entered the Red Sea waters, the Houthi forces have launched seven attacks on it. The US side has not responded to this for the time being.

(2) Singapore

An oil tanker sank in the sea area near Baiyan Island. On January 13, media reports said the Malaysian-flagged oil tanker "Silver Sincere" sank near white rock island in Singapore on January 12 and eight crew members were rescued. At present, the cause of the sunken ship remains unknown.

(3) Thailand 

33 Chinese tourists were rescued after a cruise ship sank near Phuket Island. On January 13th, a catamaran cruise ship carrying 33 Chinese tourists sank about 1.6 nautical miles north of Ratchayoi Island in Thailand. On that day, while the cruise ship was traveling from Lachayai Island to Black Island, a glass window on the right side of the ship suddenly fell off, and seawater rushed into the cabin. Twenty minutes later, the ship sank. Thirty-three Chinese tourists, two Thai tour guides and crew members were rescued by nearby vessels.
